Entry from: Santiago, Chile Entry Title: "A beautiful city nestled in the spectacular Andes" Entry: "Tuesday 5th September Big surprise - South American airline provide a great flight! Good food, smart plane and for only a 2 hour flight with Lan Chile. Stayed on the western edge of Santiago in a Business hotel called Hotel Manquehue, and you really get the feeling of living in the Andes foothills. The snow-capped mountains provide a wonderfully contrasting backdrop to city life. We ate in the hotel for convenience, and discovered some of the the worst service on the trip, despite their being only one other couple in the restaurant. Wednesday 6th September A day of Santiago sightseeing. Walking to the tube station, we were wishing we had a few more days available, as we passed the ski shops running day trips to the ski fields - Santiago is an hour away from the slopes (and incidentally a similar distance from the beach). First port of call was Cerro Santa Lucia, a fortified rock in the centre of the city. Also home to an art gallery, you pass by a large ornate fountain en route to the top. The view gives the slightly surreal sight of tower blocks outlined by the mountains. It also highlights the smog problem Santiago has, apparently the mountains block any wind, and so it just lingers in the valleys ...
